Photo: Random Acts of Kindness

According to the person who shared this photo, the young man pictured with these little children found them and discovered they couldn't go to school because their parents couldn't afford it. He took it upon himself to provide for them by paying their school fees and getting them uniforms. Amazing!, isn't it?.

Acts of kindness like this never goes unnoticed. Even if the young man didn't intend for it to be on the internet, somebody must have noticed his kindness and thought to share so others can be inspired to do same or more or even little. These kids would grow up never forgetting this kind gesture.

With everything going on the world right now, we need breaths of fresh air in the form of news like this. I hope this inspires us to help others. They do not have to be people we know from Adam. Just putting a smile on the face of a stranger goes a long way.

I pray that the blessings of God never runs dry in the life of this man and all that concerns him, Amen.

BVN Wahala!

So, I finally got my BVN done and it wasn’t easy. After trying three times, the third time was absolutely and definitely the charm!. Although it wasn’t an easy task, I was relieved that I can finally have access to the small change I have in my bank account. But one of the questions that’s been hanging on my mind regarding this BVN registration thing is, why block accounts though? Why not just deactivate them and close the accounts and ask account holders to go and collect their money?. Why restrict people from having access to their money?. With the cashless policy put in place during Fashola’s time as governor and after making sure you don’t need to be carrying money around, they still went ahead and did that? As much as they had their reasons, I personally don’t think any reason was genuine enough to have restricted access to money that could have been needed if there was an emergency.

Yeah yeah, some will say the government warned everybody, gave deadlines, gave more time after the deadlines and bla bla bla. Thing is, the government should already know the people it’s governing. They should already know how Nigerians can be. Not making excuse for Nigerians but restricting my own access to my own money was not the best of ideas. It may have worked, but I think the government should have stopped to consider the disadvantages of that first before implementing it.

The first time I went to the bank, I was told registrations were being done at another branch of the bank. Then on another day I took time out to go to this other branch and the queue I saw there just made me turn back because I just wasn’t in the frame of mind to be on that queue especially on that hot morning. The third time, I just made up my mind that it was me and this BVN today. Whether rain or sunshine, I must do the BVN registration once and for all. So I got to the bank sometime around 9/10 in the morning. The queue had already built up.

Discouraging queue at GTBank

You could tell that some had been there way earlier that the rest. After enquiring from the security guard where the BVN was taking place, he pointed to the much dreaded queue and I had no choice but to join them. Did I mention this queue was outside the bank? In the sun! That heat! And it even rained. Different types of weather all in one day. Anyway, couple of minutes or about an hour later, a staff from the bank came out and began asking who came first. Trust Nigerians. Even the people who just came barely minutes ago came forward and were claiming to be amongst people who had been there all morning. After listening to rants, the bank staff asked everyone to form a queue. We all did. Looking at the queue, you could tell we were about 35-40-45 or even 50 people there but you won’t believe this bank staff only came out with just 15 BVN registration forms. 15!. Ha!. I weak!. But what to do?. I was already on the queue. So, after he had given 13 out, he asked if there was any pregnant woman or nursing mother on the queue. Everyone looked in front of and behind themselves *silence* Nobody responded. That moment, a voice in my head said to step forward and say I was pregnant. LOL! Afterall nobody there knew me or was going to ask me to conduct a pregnancy test for confirmation. But then I also thought, what if all eyes fell on me and somehow, somebody figured out I was lying. LOL!. I just calmly maintained my silence. The bank guy then gave out the remaining forms with him, asked the rest of us to pick a number and then said he was coming back with more forms. That “coming back” turned from minutes to hours. We were still on the queue. I clearly was tired and fagged out and was side-eyeing one spot where I could sit and rest. After barely thinking about it, I just informed the guy in front of me that I was behind him and wanted to sit for a bit. Hours later, another guy from the bank came out with forms. The queue formed earlier had already dispersed as people either had to find somewhere to sit like me or had just given up. So, this guy says that to get a form, we had to form another queue. Again???. I was like, seriously???. I tried getting his attention to tell him we had already picked numbers and that if he could get his colleague to come out and clarify that, there won’t be issues. That didn’t work. God knows I wasn’t about to go form another queue and be number what? 100???. Hell no!. LOL!. I and a couple of others kept insisting that he continued where the other guy left off. That didn’t seem to be working. Fortunately for me, I saw a woman I know and I just went to say hello to her. Thank God I did because that was what saved my ass that day. Apparently, she knows one of the senior staff in the bank. It was this Uncle that took me hand in hand to the guy handling the BVN registration and told him to please sort me out. The sigh of relief I sighed is enough to divide Eleko Beach. LOL!.

That was how I got the BVN registration done.

It was quite an experience. Spent a whole working day on something I could’ve done long ago because I just remembered that months back, this suddenly highly valued BVN form was handed to me on a platter by one of the tellers in the bank. I had gone to do a transaction and the teller gave me the form and asked me to fill it and I was in such a hurry that day that I turned down the offer. If only I had known, right?. LOL!

Rebranding: Kay Jay's Korner to June Ndukwe's Blog

Change is the only constant thing in life.

Change is healthy. Everybody at some point had to make some changes in their life because they needed to grow, because they needed to identify with a higher level of newness, because they needed to take several steps forward, because they needed to be better than where they were, because they needed to take out the old and bring in the new, etc.

I have always loved writing. Its one of my hobbies. I started writing so many years ago. When I was very much into Facebook, I used to write stories as Notes as post them for my Facebook friends to read (you can find my Notes on my Facebook: June Ndukwe). Then in 2013, I thought to channel this hobby into something more consistent that people could be somewhat entertained or inspired by.

This birthed Kay Jay's Korner Blog: A platform to share my thoughts on anything and a source for anything News/Gist worthy...I was doing some thinking lately and I thought to REBRAND this Blog. I thought about changing its name to something more mature and something that represented me more. After some brain racking, I decided why not just use your name like some other bloggers have. I know it looks like I'm doing "copy copy". Lol, but haven't we all? *tongue out* Haven't each and everyone of us at some point copied something from somewhere or someone?. Lol!. But, truth be told, this is not a case of "copy copy". This is growth. This is change....Well, not the change APC promised Nigerians. Lol!

Anyways, after much thought, I have decided to rename this blog June Ndukwe's Blog. Why the name change?. Well, its been 2 years+ since I created this blog and with the other activities in my life, I try to stay afloat. Honestly, It hasn't been easy but giving up on this has never been an option either. How can you even give up on your hobby?. Lol!.

What will June Ndukwe's Blog be delivering?. Basically, you'll be seeing more of what the blog has been about. I'd be sharing God's Word, my thoughts on different stuff, some from my personal experience or the experience of others and I'd be posting anything News/Gist Worthy.....It will keep getting better with time but the most important thing is to try to be as original and consistent as possible. What's wrong with the name Kay Jay's Korner?. Nothing!. Absolutely nothing!. Thing is, I thing the former represented a side of me, but the latter represents more of me, and more is better :)

I hope "awon fans mi" will welcome this change with arms wide open. Afterall, bigger businesses in different industries have made some changes to their business. E.g:

Coca Cola

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

Microsoft

Those are just a few mentions. If they can, I can :) . Like I said, change is the only constant thing in life.

So, stay tuned!

The Word For Today: Be a Mentor to a Fatherless Boy

‘Defend the cause of the fatherless.’

Isaiah 1:17

In her book Mothers and Sons, Jean Lush talks about the challenge single mothers face in raising sons. Ages 4 to 6 are especially important and difficult. A boy at that age still loves his mother, but feels the need to gravitate towards a masculine image. If he has a father in the home, he’ll want to spend more time with his dad apart from his mother and sisters.

So what advice can be given to a mother who’s raising a son alone?

First, she must understand he has needs that she’s not best equipped to meet. Her best option is to recruit a man who can act as a role model to her son. Of course, good mentors can be difficult to find. Single mothers should consider friends, relatives, or neighbours who can offer as little as an hour or two a month. Single mothers who belong to a church should be able to find support for their boys among the male members. Scripture commands people of faith to care for children without fathers: ‘Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.’

Jesus took boys and girls on His lap and said, ‘Whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me’ (Matthew 18:5 NIV 1984 Edition). If you are a man and you have been asking God to use you in His service, this could be a real ministry opportunity for you. Think of the incredible potential of one small boy, and the privilege of helping to mould him into a man of God who fulfils the purposes of God during his lifetime. What a privilege!

The Word For Today: What Your Child Deserves (1)

‘Children are a gift from the Lord.’

Psalm 127:3

Your children deserve certain things, like:

1) Time. Not leftover time at the end of the day, but prioritised time. If your life is ruled by a schedule and your children aren’t on it, do something – quickly. Otherwise there’ll come a day when you’re not included in their schedule. Simply watching television together for three hours won’t cut it; you must be ‘emotionally present’. Sometimes that means letting them see your fears and insecurities, even as they witness your delight and appreciation of them.

2) Openness. There’s so much our children can teach us about themselves, about ourselves, and about who God is. Once we realise we don’t have all the answers, we become open to allowing God to speak to us through our children. That kind of receptivity strengthens their faith, helps them remain teachable, and also keeps us young at heart.

3) Structure. It’s vital, during the formative years, to establish rules and maintain boundaries. Children need guidelines and a framework to feel secure. In the early years this includes things like having an established bedtime, then moving it back as they get older. This helps them understand that age brings freedom, but not all at once, because freedom brings responsibility and they’re not as ready to handle it as they think.

Don’t try to be your child’s best friend, or look to them to meet your emotional needs. Their shoulders aren’t broad enough to carry that load. Be confident in God, and in who you are. Seek outside encouragement from healthy sources. In short, strive to become the firm, gentle parent your child deserves.

The Word For Today: ‘Peace of Mind’

‘I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind.’

John 14:27

You can control what goes on in your mind by filling it with God’s Word. Not the Word you read casually, but the Word you process mentally, apply to each situation that arises, and stand on in times of crisis because you know it’s your right to have the peace Jesus promised.

Jesus corrected His disciples because they lost their peace of mind during a storm. He didn’t lose His. He was asleep in the back of the boat.

So where are you today? Resting with Jesus in the back of the boat, or panicking with the others up front?

Worry overwhelms you when you forget two things:

1) What the Lord has told you. Jesus said, ‘Let us go over to the other side’ (Mark 4:35 NIV 2011 Edition). And once He spoke those words there wasn’t a wave big enough to sink them. Anytime you’re doing what God’s told you to do, you may go through storms but you won’t sink.

2) Who’s with you in the boat. The disciples thought they knew Jesus pretty well, but before the night was over they were asking, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’ (v. 41 NIV 2011 Edition).

Has it ever occurred to you that the storm you’re in right now has been permitted by God to show you that you don’t have a problem He can’t solve; that you’re not alone, and that through this experience you’ll come to know Him better?

In the Amplified Bible the words of Jesus are translated like this: ‘Do not let your hearts be…distressed, agitated’ (John 14:1). The only power worry has over you – is the power you give it.
